Chateau du Puits es Pratx

Updated: Oct 25, 2023

Continuing on in our journey through the southern French countryside on the way to Montpellier, my hope was to find out what came of Chateau du Puits es Pratx as information was not readily available online. My hope, at the very least, was to locate the estate, inquire as to what happened to the owners I knew of, find out if it was still occupied, sold, or abandoned. If nothing else, perhaps a lunch could be had at the restaurant and enjoy a refreshing respite before heading on.

Sticking to the car navigation system, the chateau was found in a non-descript area that by US standards would be a driveway in a field, but I was thrilled to find it existed. The sign was still hanging with the name on it but as we drove in, there didn’t seem to be any life. It did appear, however, that there was recent activity due to parking signs off to the side and other small vestiges indicating a recent wedding.

Not wanting to trespass or intrude, but purely out of curiosity as it was a chateau under inquiry on my planned list, my friend and I inadvertently took off on foot in different directions around the manor to locate someone who could answer questions. In my search, I was thrilled to locate Tim’s bamboo garden structure, Sasha’s sign announcing Tim’s path of discovery through the bamboo, and the age-old stone bath-turned-tree garden that were featured in the show.

Just having stumbled upon some chickens and roosters seeking shade from the warm sunshine, I heard my name being called. Heading toward the voice, I came upon my friend who had located Luke from the show. Thrilled to have someone to talk to, we learned that they are still on the show and in fact had just recently filmed an episode on a room in a wine barrel. Luke was kind enough to give us a preview given that we had not yet seen those episodes in the States.

The chateau, he said, was just doing weddings now but was still a part of the show filming. The rest of the actors were not available having just completed a wedding the past weekend and being a Monday, were resting in the heat of the day from all the activities. We thanked him, received his blessing to wander and take some more photos, and headed back to our car. What pleasure and satisfaction I felt to have solved the mystery and absolutely thrilled to have been able to see the artifacts for myself, including Tim’s kinetic bamboo wind sculpture of which I am so fond.
